Presidential Advisor and cousin to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has openly called on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to rein in some of his New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, accusing them of persistently targeting her, the National Democratic Congress with verbal attacks on social media.

The outspoken presidential aide, who was a fierce critic of the Akufo-Addo administration when in opposition, now finds herself on the receiving end of political heat from NPP activists.

She said this over the weekend when Dr Mahamudu Bawumia stormed the Jubilee House to lay a wrath for the Helicopter crash victims, when she hugged Bawumia and exchange pleasantly with him.

According to her detractors, Mogtari’s current discomfort mirrors the intense political exchanges she once unleashed against the former government, particularly her criticisms of perceived nepotism and “friends and family” governance.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari who can’t sustain the social media fire, has even blocked certain NPP supporters on social media due to their relentless comments.

The Trigger – Appointment of Sister, as GHIPSS CEO

The latest wave of political jabs against Joyce Mogtari follows the appointment of her biological sister, Clara B. Arthur, as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GHIPSS).

Clara’s husband is said to have grabbed a juicy appointment at an oil company, which is a siubsidiary of GNPC.

Clara Arthur, and former General Manager for Business Development at GHIPSS, brings extensive experience in financial technology to her new role.

While her qualifications are widely acknowledged, her family ties to Mogtari have reignited accusations of political favoritism.

This is not the only familial link drawing attention. Joyce Mogtari’s brother, John Bawa, serves as Managing Director of the State Housing Company, while her husband, Hudu Mogtari, is Chairman of the governing board of the Ghana Standards Authority.

Background – The ‘Friends and Family’ Debate

The term “friends and family” became a political buzzword during the Mahama-led opposition years, when members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) — including Mogtari herself — accused the Nana Akufo-Addo government of appointing relatives and close associates to high-ranking positions.

Back then, Joyce Mogtari frequently appeared on radio and television, warning that appointing too many family members to key posts undermined fairness and fueled public mistrust.

In a 2022 tweet, she cautioned against “the dangers of having so many family and friends in one government,” saying it bred “a sense of entitlement.”

Tables Turned

With the NDC back in power, political opponents argue that Mogtari is now benefiting from the same political culture she once condemned.

The optics, they say, resemble the very “friends and family” structure she had criticized in the past.
