The tiny West African side, Cape Verde, has surprisingly booked a ticket to next summer’s FIFA World Cup after a comprehensive second-half display against the lowly Eswatini

Cape Verde’s journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been nothing short of historic. The Blue Sharks sealed their qualification with a commanding 3-0 victory over Eswatini on Monday afternoon in Praia.

Goals from Dailon Livramento, Willy Semedo, and Stopira ensured Cape Verde topped Group D in the African qualifiers. With 23 points from 10 matches—seven wins, two draws, and just one loss—they outperformed regional giants like Cameroon to secure their spot in the expanded 48-team tournament.

This achievement is especially significant given Cape Verde’s size and footballing history. With a population of just over 500,000, it becomes the second-smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, following Iceland’s debut in 2018.

The qualification reflects years of steady progress in Cape Verdean football, fueled by a growing diaspora of players in European leagues and strategic investment in local talent and infrastructure.

The victory sparked nationwide celebrations. In a symbolic gesture, the Cape Verdean government suspended work at noon so citizens could revel in the moment.

Streets filled with jubilant fans waving flags and singing national songs, while social media lit up with messages of pride and unity. The Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde, where the decisive match was played, became the epicentre of joy as thousands gathered to witness history unfold.

Looking ahead, Cape Verde will compete on the global stage in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

Their qualification adds to Africa’s growing representation, with nine automatic slots allocated to the continent. For Cape Verde, this is more than just a sporting milestone—it’s a moment of national pride and a chance to showcase their culture, resilience, and footballing spirit to the world.
