The mini Jollof Derby headlines all the fixtures in the 2024 CHAN qualifiers as the Black Galaxies of Ghana welcome the CHAN Eagles of Nigeria at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The CHAN is a competition on the continent whereby only players plying their trade on African soil compete.

Ghana against Nigeria has been probably the biggest international game on the African continent since the mid-20th century as it has been contested fiercely at all levels.

The Black Stars at their worst moment eliminated Nigeria in the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs. Nigeria has determined to revenge even if it’s a match for only players that are based on the continent.

In the final round of qualifiers, Ghana and Nigeria square off, and the winner qualifies for the tournament to be played in Uganda-Tanzanaia-Kenya in February 2025.

Didi Dramani’s squad consists of some of the best players across the country as red-hot Asante Kotoko’s Albert Amoah, Nations Fc’s duo Razak Simpson and Faisal Charwetey, Heart of Lions’ skipper Ebenezer Abban, Benjamin Asare of Hearts of Oak and Black Star’ trio; Medeama’s Kamaradini Mamadu, Isaac Afful of GPL champions Samartex SC and Jerry Afriyie of Thought FC are all included in the 26 man squad.

Nigeria’s CHAN Eagles are fully ready to challenge Ghana for the slot in the main tournament as assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede named a very strong final 18-man squad for the first leg led by the veteran Rabiu Ali of Kano Pillars whose unmatchable leadership and experience will be key to the squad, wing-back Ismail Sadiq and centre-back Steven Manyo are also expected to offer leadership in Accra to Nigeria.

The Accra Sports Stadium is in very good shape and ready to repeat the 2008 heroics of Manuel Agogo and Essien, where Ghana beat Nigeria 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the AFCON. The first leg promises to be a cagey affair as expected.
