The charred remains of eight victims of Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region were recovered and transported in brown cocoa sacks, as forensic experts prepared to begin the painstaking process of identifying each body.

The devastating incident claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and members of the Ghana Armed Forces after a Ghana Air Force Z-9 utility helicopter went down during an official mission to Obuasi.

The aircraft burst into flames on impact, leaving the victims burnt beyond recognition.

Scene of the Crash

Rescue and security personnel arrived at Sikaman Brofoyeduru, the crash site, only to find the helicopter wreckage engulfed in flames.

By the time the fire was extinguished, nothing remained but twisted metal and the blackened remains of the passengers.

With conventional body recovery methods impossible, the remains were carefully collected and sealed in cocoa sacks — a sight that left many onlookers visibly shaken.

The sacks were then guarded by military personnel while awaiting an aircraft to airlift them to Accra for forensic analysis.

National Grief and Context

The crash has plunged the nation into mourning, with President John Dramani Mahama ordering all national flags to fly at half-mast until further notice.
