Chelsea conceded twice in six minutes, received a red card, and made two changes, with Liam Delap and Reece James replaced by Nico Jackson and Romeo Lavia, respectively. The English side was leading by a lone goal scored by Neto in the 13th minute against Brazilian Flamengo, but was under pressure until Luis Filipe’s side turned things around.

Senegalese striker Nico Jackson was shown the red card for a horror challenge that completely killed Chelsea. They went ahead and conceded another goal in the 83rd minute when Yan Wallace slotted the ball into the back of the net from close range.

After the game, Nichola Jackson wrote on his Instagram account, begging his teammate and Chelsea fans to forgive him for letting them down.

“I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card, and honestly, I’m so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation.

“I still don’t fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn’t intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility. I’ll reflect, I’ll grow, and I’ll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.”

The defeat means Chelsea will have to beat Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis to qualify because Flamengo have already stolen one of the two slots they are competing for. ES Tunis defeated Los Angeles FC 1-0 to move to third place on the Group D log, having won three points from a possible 6, like Chelsea. Youcef Belaili’s sole strike made the difference. The American side, Los Angeles FC, is out of the competition after two defeats in two games.
