Round 12 of the difficult South American World Cup qualifiers came to an end on Wednesday morning when Uruguay snatched an important 1-1 draw in Brazil at the Estadio Fonte Nova in Salvador. Fede Valverde stunned Brazil by putting Uruguay ahead in the 55th minute. Flamengo midfielder Gerson restored parity for Brazil in the 62nd minute. The 1-1 results meant Uruguay sits 2nd on the log with Brazil in 5th.

Argentina narrowly pipped poor Peru through Lautaro Martinez’s second-half strike to extend their lead on top to five points.

Chile and Venezuela enjoyed a great first half with the home side taking a 3-2 lead. Savarino’s early strike was cancelled by Edu Vargas’ 20th-minute goal from Chile. Ruben Ramirez scored in the 22nd minute to restore Venezuela’s lead.
Tomas Rincon’s own goal made it 2-2 with Chile taking a 3-2 lead through Lucas Cepeda.

The intensity reduced drastically in the second half after Cepeda had scored once again just two minutes into the half to make it 4-2 in favour of the home side, Chile. The 2015 and 2016 Copa America champions secured a rare win which helped them move out of the bottom position to 9th.

10-men Ecuador, through Enner Valencia’s 7th-minute strike, condemned Colombia to a 1-0 defeat in Barranquilla. The Los Cafeteros ended the year on a very poor note after losing back-to-back games. They sit in 4th place, trailing the leaders by 6 points while Ecuador comfortably are lying in 3rd place on the log.

Bolivia and Paraguay played a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Municipal de El Alto in Bolivia. Vaca Moreno and Miguelito scored for 10-men Bolivia, and Almiron and Enciso scored for Paraguay.

The next round of matches will resume in March 2025 with six rounds of games left to end the gruesome format.
