In a shocking move, President Donald Trump has fired Air Force General C.Q. Brown, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and ousted five other top military officers, marking a seismic shift in the US military’s leadership.
This unexpected purge has sent shockwaves throughout the Pentagon and sparked widespread criticism from Democratic lawmakers.
General Brown, the second African American to hold the position, had been expected to complete his four-year term in September 2027.
However, Trump abruptly relieved him of his duties, effective immediately. The president also announced plans to nominate retired Lieutenant General Dan “Razin” Caine as Brown’s successor, breaking with tradition by selecting a retired officer for the role.
The shake-up extends beyond General Brown, with Trump also replacing Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to lead the US Navy, as well as the air force vice chief of staff.
Additionally, the judge advocates general for the Army, Navy, and Air Force will be removed, sparking concerns about the politicization of the military.
Democratic lawmakers have condemned Trump’s decision, with Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island stating that the firings “erode the trust and professionalism that our service members require to achieve their missions.
“Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts echoed this sentiment, calling the move “un-American, unpatriotic, and dangerous for our troops and our national security”.
