A sudden tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Eastern Region football community following the death of Raymond Sarpong Okata, President of Mighty Iron Breakers FC, in a motor accident on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The incident occurred while Okata was en route to Nkyenoa Community Park to support his team in a Division Two league fixture against Golden Youth FC.

Reports indicate that the accident happened near Adukrom shortly before the scheduled 3:00 pm kickoff.

The club’s captain, who was traveling with Okata, was also involved in the crash and is currently in critical condition at Koforidua Central Hospital. The captain’s identity has not been confirmed at the time of reporting.

The Eastern Regional Football Association (RFA) quickly issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the club president.

“The Eastern RFA has received with profound shock the heartbreaking news of the untimely passing of Raymond Sarpong Okata. Raymond was not only a club president but a passionate football administrator whose commitment to grassroots football was exemplary,” the association stated.

It further noted that his leadership was marked by integrity, discipline, and an unwavering focus on nurturing young talent.

The association extended condolences to Okata’s family, the club’s management, players, technical staff, and supporters, emphasizing solidarity with Mighty Iron Breakers during this difficult period.

Michael Bekoe, manager of Golden Youth (also referred to as KofCity FC), whose team was scheduled to host the fixture, recounted the moment his side learned of the tragedy.

“We were completing our pre-match routines with the referees when one of the Mighty Iron Breakers coaches informed us that the team could not participate because their president and captain had been involved in an accident. They had taken a motorbike to reach the venue on time due to running late, and this incident occurred,” he said.

He described the news as “very painful” and extended his condolences to the Iron Breakers family.

Okata had been a dedicated administrator and a strong advocate for grassroots football in the Eastern Region, where he consistently worked to identify and support emerging talents.

His sudden passing follows a history of losses in Ghanaian football circles, including the recent death of the PAC Academy General Manager in August 2025, reminding the community of the fragility of life even for those devoted to sport.
