Two nannies have been taken into police custody for allegedly administering sleep-inducing substances to toddlers under their care in East Legon, Accra.

The suspects—Francisca Boakye, a 30-year-old student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Oti Region—are accused of giving the children unidentified sleeping tablets to keep them asleep for extended periods, allowing the nannies to attend to other household duties.

The incident came to light after the mother of the twin toddlers, a 40-year-old businesswoman, noticed persistent drowsiness and unusual behavioural changes in her two-year-old children.

Her concerns led her to investigate further, ultimately uncovering that the nannies had allegedly mixed the sleep-inducing substances into the children’s milk without her knowledge or consent.

In a disturbing revelation, Harriet reportedly confessed to subjecting the children to additional forms of abuse, including hitting them with heated objects and using derogatory language, referring to them as “chimpanzees.”

A search of the suspects’ living quarters uncovered two used sachets and four unused sachets containing substances believed to be linked to the alleged offences.

Both suspects remain in police custody and are scheduled to reappear in court on October 20, 2025.
