In a significant step towards improving public safety and urban development, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has donated 100 streetlights to the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA).
This donation is in fulfillment of a promise made by ECG’s Central Regional General Manager, Emmanuel Lumor, during an earlier visit to the municipality.
The presentation took place at the office of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), George Justice Arthur, who received the items on behalf of the Assembly.
Lumor, accompanied by members of his regional management team, reiterated ECG’s commitment to supporting local development efforts through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“This gesture is part of our corporate social responsibility to support the Metropolis. We believe that street lighting plays a vital role in enhancing security, promoting economic activities, and improving the general quality of life in communities,” Lumor stated.
The donation is particularly in support of the “Light Up the Corridors of Cape Coast” initiative, a local government program aimed at brightening streets and public spaces across the municipality.
The initiative is expected to address longstanding concerns of poor visibility and insecurity in parts of the historic city, especially in peri-urban areas and key transport corridors.
George Justice Arthur expressed deep appreciation to ECG for honouring its pledge.
He assured that the streetlights would be deployed effectively and efficiently to ensure maximum benefit to residents.
“We are grateful for this timely intervention. These lights will be used for their intended purpose, and we will ensure they help create a safer and more vibrant Cape Coast,” the MCE noted.
This partnership between ECG and CCMA underscores a growing trend of public-private collaboration aimed at addressing urban development challenges. Cape Coast, known for its rich cultural heritage and status as a major tourist destination, stands to benefit significantly from enhanced public infrastructure and services.
This is not the first time ECG has supported the municipality.
In previous years, the company has undertaken various initiatives, including public education on energy conservation, community outreach, and support for schools and health facilities.
The current donation reflects ECG’s broader vision of being more than a utility provider, positioning itself as a development partner to the communities it serves.
