The world is so different now compared to the 1990s when it was all about ‘chew and pour‘ in West African Education. The unwanted situation continued in the early 2000s making learning extremely difficult for the students who couldn’t chew and pour during exams.
West African Education curriculum has lacked basic skills, especially since the turn of the 21st century. General Science, Agricultural Science, Business, Visual Arts, and General Arts were learned at the Secondary School level without a single practice.
At the basic school in the early 2000s, students lacked the facilities, equipment and tools to do practical.
The situation is changing little by little but massive effort needs to be made to make learners equip themselves with practical experience.
The Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria has done what most of the academicians have been waiting for from the governments in West Africa.
The Ministry announced the addition of 12 new practical subjects to the Basic Education curriculum.
The 12 new subjects!
Plumbing, makeup, hairstyling, phone repairs, interior design, plumbing, tiling and floor works, event decoration, baking, and satellite/TV antenna installation are the new subjects that have now been added to the Basic Education curriculum.
The Nigerian government says this is to boost students’ practical skills and employability. The new subjects will take effect starting this month for primary and junior secondary students across the country.
Probably the best news in Education in 2025 in West Africa. This is an initiation that all Education Ministries across the region must embrace. Students after JHS and SHS must be able to be employed as plumbers, makeup artists, hairstylists, TV/Antenna installers, phone repairers, interior decorators and bakers, among so many professions.
This is what education should be all about! Been able to secure employment after completing.
