Egypt were able to hold on to Angola’s constant attack to draw goalless in the final game of the group stage. Hassan Hossam rested most of his first-team players, with the attack of Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Trezeguet and Omar Marmoush all sitting on the bench.

Egypt had already won their first two games and hence had qualified for the knockout stage. Angola, after picking a point in their two opening games, needed to win to stand any chance of progress.

After constantly pushing Egypt to the brink, they failed to score the important goal. The goalless draw means Angola has a slim chance to remain in the tournament.

In the other game of the group, Bafana Bafana of South Africa defeated Zimbabwe 3-2 in a thrilling fashion. Bafana Bafana needed only a point to qualify, while Zimbabwe needed a win at all costs.

Tshepang Moremi, Lyle Foster and Oswin Appollis each scored a goal for South Africa. Tawanda Masanhinse and an own goal by Audrey Modiba were not enough for Zimbabwe to prevent defeat.
