Lee Carsley, 50, has been confirmed by the English FA as the new manager of the Three Lions until a desired succesor is found for Gareth South gate who stepped down after the finals of Euro 2024.

Born in Birmingham but represented Republic of Ireland 40 times, the former defensive midfielder is due to lead England in next month’s Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland. England also play Nations League game in mid-October and mid-November. Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup are to begin in March 2025 and Carsley is likely to lead the Three Lions for all these encounters.

“With a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn while the FA’s recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues,” the FA said. The former Birmingham City’s care taker head coach has stepped up from his role as the U-21 head coach to the Three Lions’ boss.

“Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level. He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the Uefa Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process,” said the C.E.O of the English FA, Mark Bullingham.

Lee Carlsley won the Euro U-21 Championship last year for England after defeating Spain 1-0 in the finals. Carsley’s charges didn’t concede a single goal en route to the success in Georgia.

He has managed Coventry City (care taker), Brentford, Birmingham City (care taker), England U-20 and Englandland U-21.

“It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the Uefa Nations League,” Lee Carsley expressed his delight for the opportunity.
