Yesterday
Georgia and Czech Republic played an intense 1-1 draw where both sides will rue the missed opportunity to brighten their chances to qualify for the knockout stage. Georges Mikautadze scored a penalty on a stroke of halftime to stun Czech Republic after the favourites had dominated, created and missed numerous chances. Patrick Schick scored a lucky goal for Czech Republic to level the scores. Both teams must win in matchday 3 to ensure qualification.
Portugal smashed Turkey 3-0 to qualify for Round 16. Bernardo Silva’s strike, an unfortunate own goal from Alkaydin and Bruno Fernandes’ simple tap-in ensured an emphatic win for Portugal and also topped the group.
Belgium improved on their performance against Romania as Domenico Tedesco’s Red Devils won 2-0 against Romania. Tielemans and De Bruyne’s strike in either half ensured a good night for Belgium.
Today
Host and already qualified Germany will face probably their first major test in Switzerland. Julian Naggelsman is expected to make changes to his usual XI. Switzerland will avoid an embarrassing defeat to have a greater chance to qualify.
The big game is winner-takes-all. Scotland already has a point so a win will take them to 4 points. They will miss the services of Kieran Tierney but head coach Steve Clarke expects Liverpool’s Robertson to lead them perfectly. Hungary have lost both games they have played and even if they win, they will need so many teams to do them a huge favour. The Magyars haven’t disappointed as they have put up a good show but it has not been enough.
