England played another dull draw in Cologne at the RheinEnergieStadion against Slovenia. The Three Lions dominated massively but could not penetrate the Slovenian’s defence due to a lack of connection between the midfield and the attack.
Gareth Southgate started Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher in midfield alongside Declan Rice after his preferred option Alexander Arnold failed to deliver in the opening two games.
Gallagher was substituted and replaced by Manchester United’s teenager Kobbie Mainoo in the 46th minute. It was then that England looked purposeful.
Slovenia deserves huge credit after being able to prevent England from scoring. They kept their shape pretty well although they failed to threaten England.
Cole Palmer replaced Saka late in the second half and his presence was encouraging as he showed some glimpses.
England will learn about their opponents on Wednesday while Slovenia also will have to wait to see whether they will progress or not.
Denmark and Serbia also played out a very dull goalless draw in the group. The game was the poorest so far in the tournament as it failed to spark.
Serbia has failed massively in this tournament with too many unacceptable displays considering the squad at their disposal.
Denmark finished second in the group and will face the host Germany in the Round 16 on Saturday at the Signal Iduna Park at 7 pm.
