At the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, Switzerland began their
Euro 24 campaign with a delightful win over Marco Rossi’s Hungary.

Swiss got off to a great start with Kwadwo Duah connecting Aebischer’s assist in the 10th minute to begin the day finely.

The jubilation was cut off quickly after it was ruled offside. VAR quickly intervened and the Switzerland fans celebrated passionately. It was Duah’s debut goal and his celebrations showed how the goal meant to him.

Murat Yakin’s men continued their dominance in the 20th minute with Ruben Vargas running onto a loose pass. It was a big error from the back but Peter Gulasci saved Hungary with a tremendous save.

Michel Aebischer scored the second for Swiss in a grand manner after bending the ball brilliantly to the left post. It was 2-0 for Switzerland on the stroke of half-time.

Barnabas Varga pulled one back for Hungary after meeting Dominik Szoboszlai’s inviting inch-perfect cross with a great header to make it 2-1.

Hungary pressed for equaliser because they had nothing to lose. Substitute Breel Embolo was full of energy within the extra time as he capitalized on Hungary’s poor defence and scored to make the result 3-1.

It was a great day for Switzerland after making count the experience they have gathered all these years in major tournaments.

They have won three points on matchday 1 and a win against Scotland on matchday 2 will send them through to the next stage.
