It’s 18 years since the legendary Luka Modric participated in his first major tournament for Croatia. In the 2006 FIFA World Cup at the Berlin Olympiastadion on 13th June 2006, Brazil through Kaka’s sumptuous strike defeated Croatia by a lone goal. 20-year-old Modric was an unused substitute.

Luka Modric has been tipped to retire after a long successful career for club and country after participating in every major tournament for Croatia after the 2024 Euros.

In his first game of the Euro 2024, Croatia was smashed by near-perfect Spain at the Berlin Olympiastadion. The aged Croatia was not up to Spain’s youthfulness and approach as Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Carvajal all scored to sink Croatia.

De la Fuentas has been with the Spanish youth for a long time and hence understands the Spanish style. The midfield of Rodri, Pedri and Fabian Ruiz showed great balance and flexibility against Brozovic, Modric and Kovacic.

Croatia will meet Albania in matchday 2 and must win to boost their chances of qualifying for the knockout face. Zlatko Dalic must go back to the drawing board after his side was fully flat in Berlin.

Spain has gotten off to a good start and a victory against Italy in matchday two will send La Roja to the next stage of the competition.
