The African Football League was super, honestly speaking. There’s no way whoever that monitored the competition will say it did not live up to its billing. The maiden edition of the African Football League was super and mega.

Ahead of the CAF Super Cup 2024 in Riyad at the Kingdom Arena, CAF president Patrice Motsepe spoke highly of how successful the 2023 African Football League was.

“Every club that participated in the African Super League received $1 million just for participating, and we are working to increase that amount”, Motsepe said.

A whooping USD 1 million was given to all the 8 clubs that participated in the competition.

Simba SC, TP Mazembe, Esperance, Wydad, Enyimba, Petro Atletico, Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly were the 8 teams CAF selected to participate in the 2023 AFL.

“Raising prize money will help combat corruption and bribery in African football,” Motsepe continued.

The CAF president wants to end corruption and bribery and therefore plans to increase the participating fees for the next edition. It remains unknown when exactly the second season of the AFL will take place but CAF is optimistic of fixing it soon.

Mamelodi Sundowns under Rulani Mokwena won the maiden edition after defeating Wydad Casablanca 2-1 on aggregate.
