On our televisions between 2006 and 2014, it was so beautiful like a bunch of daffodils enjoying morning drizzling. Watching Black Stars in Africa Cups and World Cups at home, pubs and offices hit different then. Players felt so proud to wear the beautiful colours of Ghana. Ghanaians from around the world felt so pleased to support the team.
The story has completely changed now because nobody cares about what will actually happen to the Black Stars. Venues struggle to even fill to its fullest capacity when Black Stars are in town. This never happened previously.
What has happened? The reasons are many but the granddaddy of them all is the lost pride in Ghanaians towards anything in the country. Quality players have not been an issue since the beginning of the 21st Century. Ghanaian footballers have played for almost all the big clubs in Europe and still playing. So what has led to the decline of the performances of the team?
2024 was the worst year for the Black Stars after they exited the group stage of the AFCON 2023 and failed to win any of the 6 games played in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
People still have doubts about Black Stars qualifying for the 2026 World Cup due to disunity and lack of commitment among the squad.
Newly appointed technical director and advisor of Ghana football, Winfried Schafer has warned the players to do away with complacency and exhibit humility ahead of the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers
“It’s not the best players who win matches, but the best teams that play together. No one should come in thinking, ‘I’m from Real Madrid’ or ‘I play for Arsenal.’ Everyone must take pride in wearing the Ghana jersey,” Schafer said.
Pride is the keyword in Schafer’s comments. Have recent Black Stars players shown pride in wearing the famous Ghana jersey? The answer is a big NO and Winfried Schafer from afar has spotted that lack of pride in wearing Ghana’s jersey is one of the main problems that have destroyed everything about the team.
Ghan in the last 5 years has not played as a team. The veteran German tactician revealed that you will only win when you play as a team. He has urged everyone to think about the team first.
Ghana resumes the World Cup qualifiers with a fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium against lowly Chad and travels to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Al-Hoceima’s Grande Stade in rounds 5 and 6.
Ghana sits second in the group with only goals difference putting Comoros on top of the group.
