Black Queens decided not to train ahead of the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers second leg qualifiers against Egypt after the sports ministry failed to settle each player a reported $9,500 for finishing third in the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco which was played in the 2025 summer.

The Ghana senior women’s national team’s revelation that the ministry owes them was shocking as it drew severe criticisms from many Ghanaians, citing a lack of respect and admiration towards the women’s team.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams was accused of telling the players that they would be easily replaced if they refused to honour the Egypt tie. The minister quickly denied the allegations, making it clear that he can’t go to that extent because he respects and cherishes them.

Communications Minister Ofosu Kwakye, in an interview with Joy Sports, disclosed that it is not deliberate from the ministry to have not settled the Black Queens and suggested that they have to be treated the same way they treat the Black Stars.

“I think we need to treat all athletes equally, irrespective of gender,” Ofosu Kwakye said.

“I even hold the view, it may be controversial, but I think we should be paying equal wages to both men and women athletes,” he added.

Brazil, Norway, Wales, Australia, England, Ireland, Sierra Leone and the USA are the pacesetters as they pay both their men’s and women’s teams equally.

Will Ghana be the next nation to put its women’s national team on the same level as the men?
