Joseph Kabila, the former President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has received a death sentence in absentia from a military court in Kinshasa for war crimes and treason.
His location is still unknown since he was last seen earlier this year in the city of Goma, which is controlled by rebels.
The court issued an order for his immediate arrest and required him to pay $29 billion in damages to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with $2 billion each to the North and South Kivu provinces.
Kabila is alleged to support the M23 rebels, who have connections to Rwanda, and President Felix Tshisekedi has described him as the group’s orchestrator.
The previous leader, who was in power in Congo for 18 years, has rejected the accusations and described Tshisekedi’s administration as a dictatorship.
