Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has publicly urged fans to boycott the 2026 World Cup, citing security concerns and political unrest in the United States.

His comments have reignited debate about whether the U.S. is a suitable host for the tournament, which begins in June 2026.

Sepp Blatter’s call for a boycott stems from growing criticism of the domestic situation in the United States.

He echoed the concerns of Swiss anti-corruption lawyer Mark Pieth, who argued that widespread protests, alleged abuses by immigration services, and political marginalisation make the U.S. unsafe for visiting fans.

Blatter emphasised that supporters should avoid travelling to the U.S. for the competition, suggesting that watching from home would be safer and more practical.

The controversy is further fueled by political tensions surrounding Donald Trump’s administration, which has been heavily involved in preparations for the tournament.

Critics argue that Trump’s policies, both domestic and foreign, have created an atmosphere of division and hostility that undermines the spirit of a global sporting event.

Blatter’s intervention adds weight to these criticisms, as he remains one of the most recognisable figures in world football despite his own controversial tenure at FIFA.

Sepp Blatter, 89, served as the eighth FIFA president from 1998 to 2015.
