Probably the biggest and most beneficial policy that Ghanaians have enjoyed from the government in the last four decades is the Free Senior High School program, which provides free tuition to all secondary school students across the nation.

Under Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, only government school students enjoyed the policy, even though he has promised to extend it to private schools sooner rather than later.

The current president of Ghana has decided to fulfill the erstwhile government’s dream by adding the private schools to it.

Enock Nana Gyetuah, the Executive Director of Ghana National Council for Private Schools (GNACOPS), in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues announced the government’s decision to include the private schools in the Free SHS program.

“Government is going to supply us with a tentative amount of GHS 1,500 for tuition, per semester.’

“So the schools (private) have already declared their vacancies for the Free SHS, and that has been sent to the Ministry of Education,” he said. “The placement will be done in a way that the number of students will match the capacity of the private schools.”

“The arrangement is an attractive arrangement for these private SHS. The private school owners are very happy with this initiative and arrangement,” Nana Gyetuah said.

The Free SHS program is expected to continue and be revised by John Mahama’s administration contrary to the rumours that he was going to cancel it.
