After 8 good years as the manager of the English national team, Gareth Southgate has decided to bring his reign to an end.

Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports who has followed the Three Lions closely in Germany reported on Monday morning that he expects Southgate to step down in the course of the week.

After a meeting with the English Football Association, the
55-year-old former English international has decided to quit his role.

It was reported by TalkSport Uk that the English FA had wanted him to lead the team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be played in the USA-CANADA-MEXICO.

Southgate suffered much criticisms from English media and fans for his tactics and approach to games during the 2024 European Championship.

He took over from Sam Allardyce in 2016 and has since managed 102 games for England. Southgate recorded 64 wins, 20 draws and 18 defeats with a 65.2% win rate.

In four major tournaments, Gareth Southgate finished 4th and in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022 respectively.

In two European championships, England finished as runner-up.

Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager, Thomas Tuchel is a candidate for the vacant Three Lions managerial role. Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe and former Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea manager Graham Potter have all been linked to the job.

Jurgen Klopp who is jobless now has also been linked with the vacant position.

The English FA is expected to name Southgate’s succesor next week.

“Thank you, England for everything,” Southgate wrote in his appreciation message.
