The Managing Director of GCB Bank, Alhaji Farihan Alhassan, has turned down widespread calls from constituents of Tamale Central urging him to contest the parliamentary seat left vacant following the sudden demise of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
In recent weeks, sections of the constituency, including opinion leaders and grassroots supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had rallied behind Alhaji Farihan as a potential successor to the late MP, citing his leadership qualities, professional background, and close relationship with Dr. Murtala.
Many believed his candidacy would safeguard the legacy of his late “bosom brother.”
However, in a firm response, the GCB Bank boss clarified that he has no political ambition and will not be vying for the Tamale Central seat.
Speaking both on phone and in direct engagements, Alhaji Farihan stressed that he has not even given the idea any consideration.
He described the calls as an “onerous responsibility” he cannot take on at this stage of his career and life.
“I sincerely appreciate the unanimous call for me to step in and continue the legacy of my late brother, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. But I must be clear: I am not interested in contesting the Tamale Central seat,” he stated, urging constituents to disregard any contrary reports.
Alhaji Farihan, however, reassured his people of his unwavering commitment to serve his community in other capacities.
“I will always be available and committed to the wellbeing of my people,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, attention has now shifted to other potential contenders who may replace the late MP.
Names being mentioned within Tamale Central include Hanan Gundaa-doo, former Mayor of Tamale; Dr. Nashiru Issahaku, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Dr. Seidu Fitter and Dr. Mahama Shaibu, both lecturers at the University for Development Studies (UDS); Dr. Abdulai Salifu, former CEO of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR); Dr. Sule, Principal of the Tamale College of Education; Dr. Sa-ad of the Ministry of Finance; and the wife of the late MP, whose possible candidacy is also being considered.
The late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who passed away recently, was a prominent figure within the NDC and a key voice in Parliament.
His death has left not only a political vacuum but also an emotional gap for the people of Tamale Central, who are now in search of a capable hand to continue his legacy.
