A three-day co-creation workshop on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was held in Accra over the weekend bringing together key stakeholders from the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Health Service (GHS), and other partners.

The workshop, supported by UNICEF Ghana and ideas42, aimed at developing a people-focused social and behavioral change (SBC) strategy ahead of the nationwide HPV vaccination campaign.

Protecting Girls Against Cervical Cancer

The HPV vaccine, which protects against the virus that causes cervical cancer, will be offered to girls aged 9 to 14 years.

The workshop brought together school health coordinators, head teachers, community health nurses, midwives, health promoters, and immunization officers to design communication strategies that reflect the hopes, concerns, and lived experiences of the communities they serve.

Parents and adolescents from basic schools also participated in the workshop, providing real-life community perspectives.

The sessions featured storytelling, experience sharing, and interactive group work centered around one goal: to ensure that no girl is left behind.

By involving those who are closest to families, such as teachers, nurses, parents, and frontline workers, the team began shaping a campaign that girls and their caregivers can relate to and trust.

Building Confidence And Trust

The HPV vaccination campaign is not just about delivering a vaccine; it’s about building confidence, sparking meaningful conversations, and giving every girl the chance to grow up protected and healthy.

The co-creation workshop marked an important step towards achieving this goal, with participants working together to develop a comprehensive SBC strategy that will support the nationwide vaccination campaign.
