The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is requesting justice following an incident in which a police officer struck a journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

The event took place on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling Station 2. Agyekum Banahene, a journalist from GHOne TV, was reporting on the voting when an officer assaulted him.

He attempted to enter the main area of the station to make a report, but he was publicly slapped and recorded on video. Banahene states that the attack has made him feel unsettled and concerned for his safety.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor described the attack as “a significant violation of human rights. He stated that ‘this is not only inappropriate behaviour but also a second-degree crime and urged the police to respond quickly’.

Kwabena Dwumfour requested a thorough investigation and appropriate disciplinary action for the officer. The police department has now suspended the officer.

A statement from Assistant Superintendent Richmond Mensah indicated that measures were implemented following a review of the footage. The GJA states that decisive actions like this are necessary to safeguard journalists and prevent future assaults.
