Ghana will bid farewell to one of its football legends, Leonard Acquah, on November 2, 2024, at the Grace Presbyterian Church of Ghana, West Legon, Accra.

Acquah, who passed away on September 27 at the age of 84, was a key figure in Ghana’s historic victory at the 1963 African Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars claimed their first AFCON title on home soil.

A proud member of Ghana’s inaugural AFCON-winning squad, Acquah played in two critical matches of the tournament.

He contributed to Ghana’s 2-0 group stage win over Ethiopia and the emphatic 3-0 victory over Sudan in the final. This victory established Ghana as a rising force in African football and laid the groundwork for the nation’s football legacy.

Acquah’s football journey began with Accra Great Olympics in the early 1960s while serving as a soldier in the Ghana Armed Forces.

His dedication and skill on the pitch led to the formation of the Defence Stars Football Club, where he served as captain for three years.

His exceptional performances with Defence Stars earned him a call-up to the Black Stars under the guidance of Coach C.K. Gyamfi.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its profound gratitude for Acquah’s commitment and service to the national team and extended heartfelt condolences to his family.

The GFA and the wider football community are encouraged to rally around his family in giving him a fitting farewell.

As Ghana remembers a true football hero, we honor Leonard Acquah’s legacy and his contributions to the sport that continue to inspire generations. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
