Ghana national football team, the Black Stars, will play Mexico in an international friendly in May as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The match, scheduled for 22 May 2026 at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue in Mexico, will form part of a growing list of test fixtures for head coach Otto Addo and his technical team.
Both Ghana and Mexico national football teams are expected to use the encounter to assess players in contention for their World Cup squads, with the tournament to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.
Ghana’s squad for the friendly is set to feature a blend of locally based players, Europe-based professionals closely monitored by Addo, and several Under-23 prospects who are also preparing for Olympic Games qualifiers.
The Mexico fixture will be Ghana’s third confirmed preparatory match, following earlier announcements of friendlies against Austria and Germany during the March FIFA international window. Addo is expected to name his squad for those games in the coming days.
The Black Stars open their World Cup campaign against Panama on 17 June before facing England and Croatia in the remaining Group L matches.
Mexico, meanwhile, will begin their tournament in the opening match on 11 June and are set to face further Group A opposition including South Africa and one of several European or Asian qualifiers.
For Ghana, the friendly represents more than just another date on the calendar. After group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, there is a clear determination within the camp to arrive at the tournament sharper, deeper and better prepared.
The meeting with Mexico offers a timely opportunity to fine-tune tactics, test combinations and build momentum on the road to the world stage.
