The Ghana Health Service, with support from The Global Fund, has conducted a two-day training workshop on Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) for clinical staff in regional hospitals.
The workshop, held over the weekend, at the Central Regional Hospital (Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba), brought together participants from both public and private health facilities in the district.
Strengthening Public Health Surveillance
The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of clinical staff to detect, report, and respond to priority epidemic-prone diseases under surveillance in Ghana.
The Medical Director for the Central Regional Hospital, Dr. Kwame Ofori-Boadu, highlighted the importance of clinical staff playing an active role in public health surveillance to protect the health of the public.
He emphasized that IDSR is a critical component of Ghana’s public health system, and it requires the active participation of all stakeholders.
Municipal Chief Executive’s Remarks
The Municipal Chief Executive for Effutu, Rev Atta Mensah, expressed his happiness that the workshop was being held in his municipality, given the recent history of cholera in the area.
He commended health workers for their dedication to duty and urged participants to take the workshop seriously and apply the knowledge gained to ensure that everyone is safe in the district.
Key Topics Covered
The workshop covered key topics on IDSR, including identification, detection, and reporting of priority epidemic-prone diseases under surveillance in Ghana, Mpox surveillance, sample collection, case management, and risk communication and community engagement for IDSR and Mpox.
The facilitators for the workshop were experienced professionals in the field of public health, and they provided participants with practical skills and knowledge to enhance their work.
