Gifty Oware Mensah, the former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), has returned to Ghana and is cooperating with the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and mismanagement during her tenure at the NSA.
Her return comes amid intense public scrutiny, with many calling for accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
The investigation, initiated following a series of audits and reports, has uncovered allegations of misappropriation of funds meant for national service personnel, irregular award of contracts, and failure to follow due process in financial transactions.
These allegations have sparked widespread outrage, with many Ghanaians and critics arguing that the investigation should have been initiated earlier to ensure timely accountability.
Oware Mensah, who served as the Deputy Executive Director of the NSA under the previous administration, has been under scrutiny for her alleged involvement in financial irregularities.
Upon her arrival at Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, she expressed her willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation, stating, “I have returned to Ghana to clear my name and assist the authorities in their investigations. I have nothing to hide and am confident that the truth will prevail”.
The NIB has been probing her work at the NSA, including a ghost names scandal that allegedly involved the insertion of ghost names on the NSA payroll, leading to significant financial losses for the state .
The investigation has drawn significant public attention, with many Ghanaians expressing mixed reactions. While some have commended the NIB for taking action, others have questioned why it took so long for the investigation to commence.
Civil society organizations, such as the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), have called for a thorough and impartial investigation to restore public trust in government institutions.
