The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the election of Professor Ernest Yorke as President for the 2025–2027 term, marking a significant moment in the Association’s long history of professional advocacy and policy engagement.

The election results were announced on Saturday, November 15, 2025, by Dr. Rita Larsen-Reindorf, Chairperson of the GMA Electoral Committee.

This year’s elections, held during a period of renewed national debate on health sector reforms, drew strong interest from medical professionals across the country.

The GMA, founded in 1958, has over the decades become one of the most influential professional bodies, often shaping public health policy, negotiating conditions of service, and advocating for improved resources and working environments for doctors. Its leadership elections are therefore closely watched within the health sector.

Prof. Yorke emerged victorious after securing 1,857 votes, representing 53.6% of the total valid ballots cast.

He defeated his closest contender, Dr. Justice Yankson, himself a respected former General Secretary known for his vocal role in previous policy negotiations.

The electoral process, according to the Committee, was smooth and transparent, reflecting the Association’s commitment to internal democracy.

A seasoned physician and educator, Prof. Yorke brings decades of experience to his new position.

Over the years, he has served in several key leadership roles within the GMA, including Junior Doctors’ Representative Council member, Divisional Secretary, Divisional Vice Chairman, and member of the GMA Council.

Beyond the presidency, several other executive positions were filled in the nationwide poll. The newly elected leaders are:

Vice President: Dr. (Med) Arko Akoto-Ampaw; General Secretary: Dr. (Med) Richard Coleman; Assistant General Secretary: Dr. (Med) Amaane-Frimpong Dan; Treasurer: Dr. (Med) Kwadwo Appiagye; Male Executive Member: Dr. (Med) L. Baye and Female Executive Member: Dr. (Med) Louisa Akumiah.

Each of these executives secured decisive victories in their respective categories, completing the seven-member leadership team that will steer the Association until 2027.

The election comes at a critical time when the GMA is expected to take strong positions on government reforms, including decentralised postings, Free Primary Health Care, Agenda 111 implementation, and the evolving landscape of public–private partnerships in the health sector. With growing expectations from both doctors and policymakers, the new administration faces significant responsibility in shaping the medical future.
