The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Police Service an ultimatum to prosecute a student in Offinso who has stabbed the left eye of a teacher.

In an interview with Daniel Opoku of 3news, the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko, disclosed that teachers may not hesitate to withdraw their services from next week if duty bearers fail to act swiftly by letting the law work.

According to Mr Tanko, on November 8, he received a report from Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso where he was told a teacher had been stabbed in the left eye by a student after the teacher had asked the student who was loitering to enter the classroom.

Currently, the teacher has lost his left eye while the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Services are yet to act. The General Secretary, who has been angered by the situation, has served notice of industrial disharmony if authorities do not take any action.

“The teacher has lost his left eye, meaning that for the rest of his life, he will be going through life with only one eye. His medical bills and all those things, who will take care of it?” he asked.

“That’s why we are by this medium telling the duty bearers of the Ghana Education Service that if by next week we do not hear anything positive, we will decide the next line of action,” Mr Tanko warned.

Teacher and student fracas have been so common in the Ghana Education Service recently as students have been in constant fight against their teachers with the GES failing to act.
