At the 7th Ghana Football Awards, Hearts of Oak and Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare won the best goalkeeper of the season 2024-25.
The goalkeeper’s rise from relegated Accra Great Olympics to Hearts of Oak to Black Stars number one is probably the biggest story in the season in Ghanaian football.
When Otto Addo decided to give him a call-up to the Black Stars, many thought he was just there to make the numbers, but he shocked everyone and benched the perennial goalkeepers Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joe Wollacot for the number one position.
Asare was looking so good when his name was mentioned, he walked on the stage, collected his prize, and bulleted, “I think there is a time for everything. I had received a call-up earlier during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, but I feel this was the right moment. There’s a saying that good things come to those who are patient”, Benjamin said.
“Going through tough times shapes your mindset, and when things finally change, the feeling is entirely different. This has always been my goal, and by God’s grace, I’ve reached this level. I give thanks to God for the opportunity.”
Benjamin Asare’s fortune has changed, and he is so thankful to God for giving him patience and the belief that he was going to blow. The keeper is expected to keep his Phobia and Black stars number one slots.
