The Road Tolls were introduced to support the government guarantee Ghana better roads and also maintain them in the early 1990s.

It was suddenly abolished by the Akufo Addo’s government, much to the annoyance of many Ghanaians, in November 2021 when the then Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako Attah, announced its cancellation.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced the decision to bring back the collection of road tolls with improved plans.
In a statement released to the press, the Ministry revealed that it plans to put together the modalities for ultra-modern and technologically driven systems.

Ghanaian roads are in a deplorable state and the new government is committed to guaranteeing Ghanaians better ones. In the quest to provide better roads for the country, they intend to reintroduce the road and bridge tolls.

What Atto Forson said before the Appointments Committee of Parliament

“The previous government indeed removed the road toll, but getting to the end, they signalled that the road toll is coming back. They submitted it to Parliament but it was not laid despite a concession agreement with a company to reintroduce it.

“The NDC indicated from day one that the road toll will come back. We are not running away from it. So I can assure you we are a party that sticks to our promises. And whatever we have promised to do, we will do just that. If the road toll is a way to raise revenue, we will raise the revenue.”
