It all began as a rumour, but it has become a reality. It was all over the news that Ghana’s government was planning to rename the nation’s biggest international airport in the capital city, Accra.

The Government of Ghana has officially renamed Kotoka International Airport back to its original title, Accra International Airport.

The Ministry of Transport explained that the facility was first known internationally as Accra International Airport before being redesignated in honour of Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, one of the military figures who played a role in the 1966 coup that ousted President Kwame Nkrumah.

Officials emphasised that the change is meant to restore the airport’s former and globally recognised identity, noting that its international aviation code “ACC” has always remained unchanged.

The renaming carries deep historical symbolism. It was announced on the 60th anniversary of the coup that toppled Nkrumah, Ghana’s founding leader.

By removing Kotoka’s name, the government signalled a desire to move away from celebrating figures associated with military intervention in democratic governance.

The decision has reignited national debate, with some viewing it as a necessary correction to history, while others argue that Kotoka’s role in Ghana’s past should not be erased.
