In the wake of a devastating military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including government officials and military personnel, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all his official duties and engagements for the remainder of the week.

The President’s decision underscores the gravity of the national tragedy that has shaken the country’s leadership and its citizens.

According to a statement released by the Presidency on Wednesday, August 6, President Mahama will be observing a period of mourning as a mark of respect for the deceased.

The announcement was made by the President’s spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

As part of the government’s response to the incident, a three-day period of national mourning will commence on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

During this time, Ghanaians are expected to honour the memory of the fallen with solemn reflection and patriotism.

The Chief of Staff has also issued a directive for all national flags to be flown at half-mast across the country until further notice.

The tragic helicopter crash occurred earlier on Wednesday in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The aircraft, which was on a routine military operation, went down under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Onboard were senior government officials including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, as well as military officers and crew.

The loss of such high-profile figures has not only left a leadership vacuum but has also plunged the nation into collective grief.

The President, who is said to be emotionally distressed by the incident, has received messages of condolence from across the political spectrum, religious bodies, traditional authorities, and the international community.

This incident marks one of the most painful moments in Ghana’s recent political and military history, drawing parallels to past aviation tragedies that claimed the lives of public figures.

The government has assured the public of a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent future occurrences and bring closure to the bereaved families.
