Probably, Ghana’s finest footballer after Abedi Pele and Sammy Kuffuor is Micheal Essien. He was a super star in the French Ligue 1 and English Premiership in the mid 2000s.

The central midfielder cum defender was very unplayable whenever he was in his element.

One thing that prevented him at times to reach his full potential was only injuries.

In an interview with JoySports, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder disclosed that he suffered his first injury while playing for Black Stars.

“I suffered my first injury while I was playing for the Black Stars, against Libya. That was when I damaged my knee badly. I mean, it happens,” he said.

Knee injuries normally end most footballers careers and Essien was even lucky to enjoy football at the top level.

“Most of my bad injuries happened when I was playing for the Black Stars, but who cares? It happens. I do not hold any grudges or anything. I was just unlucky, and injuries are part of the game, so we just have to deal with it.”

“You know, I have no regrets. I think I had quite a decent career, and I always look into the positive side of every situation,” Essien added.

Essien, 41, expressed his delight in the career he had. He earned the nickname ‘The Bison’ because of his fearlessness and powerful style of play.

Essien won 2 Premier League titles and 1 UEFA Champions League with Chelsea among many other trophies.
