Tensions are escalating between the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Ghana Police Service following the continued detention of party activist, Sir-Obama Pokuase, despite a court order granting him bail.

An Accra Circuit Court on Friday granted Daniel Adomako, aka Sir Obama Pokuase bail with specific conditions, including the provision of sureties.

According to his legal team and NPP supporters, every condition has been satisfied and verified by the court registrar, who reportedly instructed the police to proceed with the bail execution.

Yet, days after the ruling, the activist remains in police custody.

Lawyers Cry Foul

One of Pokuase’s lawyers, Ernest Opoku Nti, accused Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Yohunu of deliberately flouting the court’s directive for political reasons.

“At this stage, the continuous detention of the accused person is simply political. It is just power at play,” Nti told journalists.

“The ups and downs and unnecessary tricks here and there make no sense. Please, be honourable enough to release the suspect. Show some fidelity to the law, the courts, and our great Constitution—even though we have no confidence in you. Shame us, Mr. IGP!”

Another legal representative went further, alleging that the IGP and his officers were acting under pressure from the Mahama administration to persecute political opponents.

“Bail conditions have been fully met and verified by the court, yet the Ghana Police led by the incompetent IGP Yohunu are refusing to release Sir Obama and co. This is a blatant abuse of power and a shameful continuation of the Mahama regime’s lawless tactics,” the lawyer claimed.
