The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service, AICO1 Ahmed Abdul Samad, over his alleged involvement in the transportation of 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition intercepted in the Ashanti Region.

Police sources say the suspect, a native of Nalerigu, is currently stationed at the Paga Sector Command of the Immigration Service. During interrogation, AICO1 Abdul Samad denied any knowledge of the ammunition but confirmed that he was transferred in June 2025 from the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters, where he previously served as a dispatch rider.

According to the suspect, he left behind some personal items, including a body armour plate and an old pair of black long boots, during his relocation. He told investigators that on December 26, 2025, he contacted a colleague identified as Isaac, an Immigration officer based at the Service’s headquarters in Accra, to send the items to him.

Police said the items were packaged together with a ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser and a disco bulb, and transported on an OA Bus with registration number GT 5771–18.

However, during a routine stop-and-search operation at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region, officers intercepted the bus and discovered 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition. A bag concealed beneath the driver’s seat was also found to contain two bulletproof plates, a crushed black helmet and a pair of long boots.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the transportation of the ammunition and to identify all individuals connected to the incident.
