Interpol has detained 260 individuals across 14 African nations as part of an effort to address online romance and extortion scams.

These scams have allegedly swindled over 1,400 victims out of nearly $2.8 million.

In Ghana, 68 individuals are accused of using false identities to solicit fraudulent shipping fees or to extort victims with explicit videos.

Police in Senegal arrested 22 individuals suspected of impersonating celebrities to defraud more than 100 victims of $34,000.

At the same time, authorities in the Ivory Coast detained 24 suspects for allegedly using private images for extortion.

Interpol states that the operation highlights the increasing global risk of online romance scams.
