A Ghanaian catholic priest has apologised after a video of him doing a rendition of a popular secular song during a church service.
Rev Fr Peter Kusi Twumasi, the acting rector of St Stephen Catholic Rectorate in Bodomase, was filmed singing King Paluta’s hit song ‘Aseda’ while celebrating Mass.
In a statement dated August 13, and addressed to the National Liturgical Commission seen by this portal, Fr Twumasi expressed “deep regret and humility,” saying he had let his guard down by allowing “a secular influence to enter our sacred space.”
“I realize now that my mistake has caused offense and confusion, and for that I am truly sorry,” noted the priest.
Fr Twumasi went on to say: “Please know that my intention was never to disrespect our traditions or our faith. I am committed to upholding the values and teachings of our Church, and I fell short of that standard.”
The video of the priest singing the secular love song during the service attracted widespread criticism on social media from churchgoers and commentators.
The barrage of attacks compelled him, “sincerest apologies to our Bishop, the Diocese, National Liturgical Commission and the entire Catholic Community for any offense or scandal caused by my action.”
He pledged: “I commit to being more mindful and discerning in my public expressions ensuring they align with the values and traditions of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.”
