Ex-Black Stars striker Kwesi Appiah believes Ghana has not been able to find a replacement for the legendary Asamoah Gyan since he announced his retirement from the Black Stars.
34-year-old London-born Kwesi Appiah was part of Ghana’s 2015 AFCON squad when Ghana lost on penalties to Ivory Coast in the finals and knows perfectly how important former captain Asamoah Gyan was to the team.
“It’s a very tough task to replace someone of his calibre and quality. That type of striker and character is not produced that often,” Appiah told Flashscore.
Replacing Asamoah Gyan could take decades because Baby Jet was so great for Ghana. He scored 51 goals in 109 games for Black Stars making him the all time top scorer for the senior national team. Such figure could bve irreplaceable.
Kwesi Appiah continued, “At this moment in time, you have a player like Kudus and potentially Semenyo, who are playing well for their clubs. We’d hope they can eventually have that type of level and consistency for Ghana to help lead the team to glory as Asamoah Gyan so often did.”
Kwesi Appiah is hoping Kudus and Semenyo could be so consistent for Black Stars to help bring the team back to the top table.
Consistency is so key in every professional footballer’s career. This is what made Asamoah Gyan a stand-out performer for the Black Stars. In his long 16-year career for Ghana, Gyan made a huge name for himself taking the Black Stars to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and two finals of the AFCON. His goals were priceless and this is exactly what the team has been missing.
Ghana has a difficult task in replacing Asamoah Gyan as Kwesi Appiah is saying.
