It was a total utter disgrace in 6 minutes for Didi Dramani and his Black Galaxies of Ghana in Uyo in the second leg of the 2024 CHAN qualifiers. The Jollof Derby has always lived up to its billing and the return leg was expected to be fiercely contested.

The first leg ended in a stalemate at the Accra Sports Stadium with momentum switching to the local Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the return encounter. The Nigerians knew any form of victory would send them through to the 2024 CHAN set to be played across Tanzania-Uganda-Kenya in February 2024.

At the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the state capital of Akwa Ibom, Nigeria got off to a fast start as they pressured and suffocated their rivals, Ghana from all angles.

The opening goal was scored by the 22-year-old Remo Stars defender Ismaila Ibrahim in the 19th minute. Three minutes later, another Remo Stars defender, Junior Nduka doubled Nigeria’s lead to put the game almost beyond Ghana. Isaac Saviour in the 25th minute ended Ghana’s dream with Nigeria’s third. Nigeria was enjoying the Jollof Derby II as they were making light work on Ghana.

Nigeria ended the first half with a very comfortable lead. Things promised to be difficult as there was no way back for the Galaxies in the next 45 minutes.

Berekum Chelsea’s striker who is on the verge of signing for Tanzanian giants Simba SC, Stephen Amankonah, pulled one back in the 73rd minute for Ghana but it was too late for the lacklustre Ghana to stage an unbelievable comeback.

Nigeria won 3-1 in the West African Derby to book a place in the CHAN 2024.

Ghana’s disastrous 2024 ended in another disaster after the Black Stars earlier failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
