Asante Kotoko have confirmed that veteran tactician Karim Zito will continue as the club’s substantive head coach following a remarkable turnaround in the club’s form under his interim leadership during the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.
The announcement was made by the club’s Interim Management Committee (IMC), led by Nana Apinkrah Akwasi Awuah, who have been impressed by the team’s consistent performances and tactical discipline since Zito took over in the second round of the season.
Zito was appointed on an interim basis earlier this year after former head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum was relieved of his duties due to a string of poor results that left Kotoko languishing in mid-table and out of the title conversation.
The club, struggling with cohesion and morale, was in desperate need of a turnaround.
Having previously guided Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites, to international glory and led Dreams FC to an historic CAF Confederation Cup semifinal appearance in their debut campaign, Karim Zito came with a reputation for building resilient, competitive sides — and he has delivered.
Since his arrival, Asante Kotoko have gone unbeaten in all competitions, a record that includes sealing a spot in the MTN FA Cup final and reigniting their title hopes in the Ghana Premier League.
With just two matches remaining in the league campaign, the Porcupine Warriors are firmly in contention to lift the domestic double — an achievement that once seemed unlikely before Zito’s appointment.
The turnaround has sparked optimism not only for domestic success but for a return to continental relevance.
By confirming Karim Zito as the club’s permanent head coach ahead of next season, Kotoko are placing their faith in his ability to lead them back onto the African stage.
Should they win either the Premier League or the FA Cup, Kotoko will represent Ghana in either the CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup next season.
The IMC is hopeful that Zito’s CAF experience — particularly his strong run with Dreams FC — can translate into another strong continental campaign, this time with a much larger and expectation-laden club like Kotoko.
Zito and his team will now focus on their Matchday 33 clash against Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
A win would bring them closer to clinching the league title and extending their unbeaten streak, adding more weight to Zito’s impact and the IMC’s decision to keep him at the helm.
