A devastating accident occurred in Agona Asafo, Central Region, when a Kia truck ran into a crowd, killing 17 people and injuring several others.

The incident happened during a float organized by the Agona Asafo Akwambo Planning Committee to showcase a giant football trophy ahead of a gala competition.

The Float And Accident

The committee had purchased the trophy to support the gala, which is part of the Akwambo Festival.

The float was meant to create awareness and announce cash prizes for the best player, best goalkeeper, and winning team.

However, the celebration turned tragic when the Kia truck ran into the crowd, causing widespread panic and destruction.

Response

The injured were rushed to the Agona Swedru Municipal Government Hospital, where 11 were treated and discharged.

Six others with deep cuts remain hospitalized, and Dr. Julius Abuku, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, assured that doctors and nurses were doing everything possible to save lives.

Those in critical condition had undergone surgery and were responding to treatment.

Community Reaction

Nana Yamfo Nsuako XII, Chief of Agona Asafo and Nifahene of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, described the accident as “unfortunate.”

Despite the incident, the chief assured that the Akwambo Festival would proceed as scheduled from September 1 to 6, with a grand durbar of chiefs and people to climax the celebration.

Previous Accidents

This incident comes on the heels of another fatal accident in June this year, where three students and a taxi driver died following a crash at Natwibuw on the Winneba-Apam highway.

The accident was caused by a wrongful overtaking maneuver, highlighting the need for increased road safety measures in the region.
