Born to Ghanaian parents in Stockport in Greater Manchester, the 20-year-old Mainoo has not been enjoying many minutes in the current campaign as expected.
Fans and pundits have criticised head coach Ruben Amorim’s decision to put the talented midfielder on the bench, leading to tension around his future.
When Manchester United drew 4-4 against Bournemouth, Mainoo’s elder brother was in a T-shirt where he was telling the world that his younger brother has been imprisoned by the club.

“Free Kobbie Mainoo” was written in front of the shirt. The message was so disappointing that club legend Roy Keane described Mainoo’s brother as an idiot.
The Red Devils’ visit to Aston Villa ended in a 2-1 defeat, with Kobbie Mainoo missing the trip. His absence divided opinion, with many suggesting that Amorim was punishing the boy for his brother’s behaviour.
Amorim has revealed that he is the future of the club, contrary to the punishment rumours when he missed the Villa Park trip.
“He is going to be the future of Manchester United. That is my feeling. So you [Mainoo] just need to wait for each chance, and everything can change in football in two days. He will have the opportunity that he has all the time to force his way in,” said Amorim.
He continued, “The position of Casemiro [No 6], he can do it. He can play if we play with three in midfield. He can play as we play in the position of Mason Mount [No 10],” Amorim emphasised how Mainoo’s versatility makes him a great player.
Kobbie Mainoo pushed for a loan move elsewhere because he is afraid of losing his slot in the English national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The club denied him the opportunity, but Amorim has hinted that it could be possible. “If we are not getting someone, it is hard to leave,” he said.
