A Koforidua court has remanded a 22-year-old man, identified only as Kwame, into custody for allegedly robbing and raping a 25-year-old nurse who is undertaking her National Service.
The incident, which has shocked the New Juaben community, occurred under circumstances that suggest a calculated and premeditated attack.
According to police reports, the victim had been living in a rented room located within the accused’s family compound for only a few months prior to the attack.
On the day of the incident, Kwame allegedly lured the nurse out of her room by telling her that someone was waiting for her near the Yiadom Hwedie Palace, the seat of the New Juabenmanhene.
While the unsuspecting victim stepped out, Kwame is said to have quickly changed into different clothes, masked his face, and entered her bedroom.
Upon her return, he reportedly ambushed her with a knife and demanded all her money. Fearing for her life, the victim handed over more than GH¢1,000 in cash.
Prosecutors say the accused then demanded a mobile money transfer, but the victim informed him that her account had no funds.
Kwame allegedly escalated the threat, ordering the nurse to undress.
Under the knife-point threat, he forced her into a doggy-style position and sexually assaulted her.
The victim reported the incident to police, leading to Kwame’s arrest and subsequent court appearance.
The court ordered that he be remanded into custody to assist with further investigations.
