Journalists and football fans across the globe got stunned when CAF president Patrice Motsepe relayed that the AFCON will now be played every four years starting from 2029.
Many believe it was a weird decision because the leaders of African football are just satisfying FIFA and UEFA, who have always opposed the timing of the famous Africa Cup of Nations.
On Metro TV, Ghana’s football Association president, Kurt Okraku, disclosed that they took a unanimous decision to make sure that the competition would be protected.
“We unanimously agreed to switch to a four-year AFCON cycle. The decision was driven by commercial considerations and the need to schedule the competition at a time that would not be worrying to the main actors (players). We also wanted to end clashes with our counterparts from other continents, particularly Europe.”
AFCON 2025 was successful except for the finals brouhaha, as it stole the attention of the world.
Senegal lifted their second title in a feisty fashion in Rabat after securing a slim 1-0 win over host nation Morocco.
The next edition will be played across East African nations Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in 2027.
No bid has been submitted for the 2028 edition, which will end the two-year cycle.
