Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah is optimistic about his chances of guiding Sudan to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Appiah, who previously led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, is currently overseeing a surprising campaign with Sudan.
His team sits atop Group B after four matches, leading former African champions Senegal and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finalists, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In an interview with FIFA’s media channel, Appiah expressed his confidence in his team’s ability to secure a World Cup berth. “I firmly believe we can achieve this,” he said.
Sudan will face a critical match against Senegal in March 2025 as the qualifiers resume. Currently, Sudan holds a two-point advantage over the Senegalese side.
Appiah elaborated on his team’s strategy, noting, “We started this campaign with a clear objective: to accumulate as many points as possible at home.
Our victory over Congo DR (1-0) was a testament to the players’ determination, and our 2-0 win against Mauritania away has bolstered our confidence.”
He praised the Sudanese football federation for their support, saying, “The federation is doing a remarkable job, providing excellent conditions for us. Everyone is contributing to the success of this qualifying campaign.”
Appiah, who was appointed Sudan coach in September 2023, is focused on returning the country to the Africa Cup of Nations and making a significant impact on the World Cup stage.
